I've this plant in my collection since last year but never knew its medicinal value, It has lovely small flowers and it's been blooming now since last month.

Feverfew is a traditional medicinal herb which is found in many old gardens, and is also occasionally grown for ornament, which are then used in Christmas trees. Feverfew is herbaceous and perennial plant. The plant grows into a small bush up to around 18 inches high, with citrus-scented leaves and is covered by flowers reminiscent of daisies. It spreads rapidly, and they will cover a wide area after a few years. Leaves are ovate, pinnately cut, basal, hairy and up to 3 inches long, with 3 to 5 scalloped sections. Daisy-like flowerheads with white ray and yellowish disc florets to 1 inch across are held in dense corymbs. Various cultivars have been developed for ornamental purposes.

Medicinal uses: Feverfew has been used for reducing fever, for treating headaches, arthritis and digestive problems. It is hypothesised that by inhibiting the release of serotonin and prostaglandins, both of which are believed to aid the onset of migraines, feverfew limits the inflammation of blood vessels in the head.

Gardeners' Sustainable Living Project

I have been gardening now since last 2-3 years. I try my best to use old bottles,cans etc as containers for my plants. I use plastic water bottles to propagate plants and share with my friends. Last year, All my spring seeds were sowed in these bottles only.

As i do not have much land for my garden, I am trying to establish a roof top garden. I have got few barrels cut into half in which i am growing some Tulips, hyacinth,asiatic lily and veggies like Brinjal, capsicum, pepper, squash etc. Though this year i am still waiting for the seedlings. I have never ever used any chemical spray or fertilizer in my garden all I use is yard manure. I have also established my small compost pit and I think by next month compost will be ready for use.

Some soil management/amendment techniques like using Panchagavya, jiwamrit, compost etc have been listed in "Taking roots" here which are all inexpensive and ultimately help to improve the soil condition.

My this year Plans are:

1. Growing my own food : Coriander, Brinjal, Capsicum, gourd, bitter gourd, squash,tomatoes, cucumbers etc all have been sowed and will be planted in next few weeks.

2. Using less expensive pots and containers: I believe in recycling things and try to use plastic pots barrels etc for my plants. I am planing to plant my veggies in plastic paint boxes this year.

3. Using no Cemical fertilizer and sprays.

4. Saving seeds and sharing with friends : I stop dead heading my plants near fall and save seeds which i share with my friends and family

I was, and still am fasicinated with the hibiscus flower. I do not know why but i like these. I have alwyas wanted to grow these. This year I finally it survived (I had bought a plant last year too but it couldn't survive) and have few blooms too :)

The nursery guy didn't knew which color or type it was (As always have to buy plants just on luck) I wanted to have a yellow or orange colored hibiscus but this one is beautiful too(Isn't It) I am happy with it .

After all the construction mess at home, this spring really make me happy. We were having only ground floor earlier and the adjoining building was 3 storied so we weren't get much sun. But now we do get SUN and thats make my plants happy (& me offcourse).

These Cyclamen were blooming since January and with unusual temp increase I think they'll end up soon

I have never got more than one bloom at a time in my calla lily plants but now they get full sun they are blooming beautifully.

I am growing ranunculus for the first time, I bought 2 plants, as usual the nursery guy doesn't knew the colors so it was just luck that I got one red and one yellow. Nurseries here are unorganised, many a times I have to buy on sheer luck basis not knowing which color the blooms will be ( thats another story lets not discuss about all this and enjoy the beauties). Will try to get some tubers from a good source this year for fall planting.

Its the first time I am growing cyclamen, I hope i'll be able to save them for next year too. They are just so beautiful and its been blooming since January.

Panchagavya !

I do not like to use chemical fertilizers to my plant, I've been using cow manure (which i get easily from my neighbours) and vermi-compost. I have tried my hands on composting too ( hope it will cook properly). I am planning to grow some veggies this season and would love to have a organic garden.

I found some interesting info for all you fellow gardeners:

In Sanskrit, Panchagavya means the blend of five products obtained from cow. (All these five products are individually called ‘Gavya’ and collectively termed as ‘Panchagavya’) It contains ghee, milk, curd, cow dung and cow’s urine. Panchagavya had reverence in the scripts of Vedas (devine scripts of Indian wisdom) and Vrkshyurveda (Vrksha means plants and ayurveda means health system). The texts on Vrkshayurveda are systematizations of the practices the farmers followed at field level, placed in a theoretical framework and it defined certain plant growth stimulants; among them Panchagavya was an important one that enhanced the biological efficiency of crop plants and the quality of fruits and vegetables (Natarajan, 2002).

For making approx. 20 litres of panchagavya you need the following:
* Fresh cow dung - 5kg
* Fresh cow’s urine – 3 litres
* Cow’s milk – 2 litres
* Cow’s curd – 2 litres
* Cow’s ghee – 500 gms
* Jaggery – 500 gms
* Water or sugarcane juice - 3 litres
* Ripe banana fruit - 1 bunch (12 nos.)
* Tender coconut water – 3 litres
* toddy – 2 litres
(If toddy is not available, you can ferment 3 litres of tender coconut water by keeping it in a pot for 1 week. That will become toddy. )

Method of preparation:
* Take 5 kgs of fresh cow dung and mix it thoroughly with 500 gms of cow’s ghee and keep it in a plastic drum or a mud pot. It should not be kept in a metal container because it will corrode and react with the metal. Keep the ghee and the cow dung mixture for 4 days, mixing it twice a day.
* On the 5th day add cow’s urine, cow’s milk (cow’s milk can be boiled, cooled and then added) and cow’s curd, then jaggery with water or sugarcane juice and banana fruit (which has to be mashed and mixed thoroughly.) Then tender coconut water has to be added.
* Wait for another 15 days, stirring twice daily. Stirring the contents for about 20 minutes each time facilitates aerobic microbial activity.
* On the 19th day the panchagavya solution will be ready. This solution must be kept under a net, i.e. it must be covered with a muslin or fine cloth so that the common fly cannot sit on it and lay eggs. For use after 19th day, stir the mixture at least once a day to aerate it.

Application
200ml of this solution can be diluted with 10 litres of water with proper stirring for spraying on plants. For soil application, dilute 1000ml in 10litres of water.

Periodicity of use
Once in 15 days, it can be used for all crops. In winter crops, 1.5-2% usage is sufficient but for all other crops 3% should be used.

A leaf that isn't a leaf

My Unknown Plant is not unknown anymore, I posted the pics on Plant swap too and a dear friend Jeff frye helped me and found out that this is Ruscus Hypoglossum.

The flowers' aren't born on leaves but the thing that looks like leaves are stems ( Now that is something really surprising and interesting)

Ruscus hypoglossum, a native of Western Europe to Iran, is a compact evergreen shrub with a creeping rootstock that will reach 18 inches tall. It is an interesting plant with leaf-like cladodes (also known as phylloclades) to 3 inches wide to 1½ inches wide tapering at both ends. The true leaves are the smaller green appendages around the flowers. The "phylloclade" is a leaf-like flattened stem! (The giveaway is to look at the venation, which is much more stem-like).

Blooming Time: In spring, the very small flowers are produce in the axil of the leaf-like bract on the top of the cladode.

Culture: Ruscus hypoglossum need partial shade to full shade. Even though they tolerate full sun, the color is richer in shade. We grow ours under 70% shade all year. A suitable soil mix consists of 1 part peat moss to 3 parts loam to 1 part sand or perlite. They are very drought tolerant, but should be watered twice a week for optimum growth. Plants are fertilized once during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer. For folks with a warmer winter temperature (zone 8-10) they make outstanding groundcover under trees where nothing else will grow.

Propagation: Ruscus hypoglossum are propagated by division or by seed. Seeds need to be treated with gibberelic acid for 48 hours before sowing. Seeds are sown ¼ inch deep and should germinate in 60 to 120 days at 70° F.

Ruscus hypoglossum was featured as Plant of the Week February 1-7, 2002.

Cyclamen - I saw cyclamen flower in some fellow bloggers' post and I just wanted to have it, they are so beautiful. Went to few nurseries but it wasn't available there, Last week I went to another nursery ( one I don't visit normally) and asked them for Cyclamen and yes yes yes it was there!

One in clay pots was for Rs 110 and in poly bags was for Rs 40, I bought 3 plants in poly bags.

I also bought Petunia plants, Though I have decided to sow seeds this year and have got seeds too but they were in bloom at nursery so couldn't resist myself and bought few plants of petunia too.

I have never been lucky with mums, this year atleast i can see these blooms!

Still these beauties are suffering from attack of some tiny black insects ( Do not know the name).

Every year its the same story, there are lots of buds but these insects won't let them have there show. Only good thing was that they do come back each year

I tried soap water spray this year ( Thanks to my blogging friends) it reduced there number but they aren't gone yet.

I have to content myself with fewer flowers But I am happy :) !

I have observed recently that i am getting addicted to collecting & growing more and more plants be it flowers or veggies. Since we are into construction phase of our home these days I keep imagining how and what I will do.

I want to have a terrace garden. Would love to have Lemon, rice, veggies, other fruits........ etc etc etc in my terrace. What are you thinking I am dreaming, well I thought so but while searching for options I found this amazing blog and now I know all this can be in real for sure!

Natueco farming

Have a look how Ms. Preeti Patil is successfully growing all these things in her garden (Terrace) using Natueco Farming. She's using special soil mix called Amrit Mitti ( Nectar Soil) with all natural things and to speed up the process Amrit Jal (Nectar Water) is used. She has shared the recipe and other info regarding technique of Natueco Farming.

I was away for few days, so wasn't able to thank all of you for identifying this flower - Dahlia.

Its still blooming and now is more happy 'cause it has got its name now.

Buying bulbs from the Heaven

Srinagar, capital of Jammu & Kashmir State in India is a well known tourist destination and is also called Heaven on earth. Each year Tulip Festival is also celebrated in Srinagar attracting thousands of visitors, More than 60 varieties of Tulips in Different colors are grown.

I had bought tulips in local nursery last year but there were no blooms to see. So this year I tried to get it from Srinagar, I found one contact through net and Ordered few bulbs . The rates were reasonable. Along with tulips , I also ordered some lillium and Hyacinth. I have received my parcel and soon will be planting these gems from Heaven.

The construction work is still going on at home and my plants have suffered a lot during this.
Though i tried to save a lot, but a few pots were broken and some plants are in bad shape ( i think cement is the reason) but are still surviving.

After much stress some of the flowers managed to bloom :)

Change is the law of nature, we have to adapt accordingly. Through out the journey of life we change our self, sometime its intentional ,sometime it the need of the circumstances and some time for our loved ones.

Ooops I think I forgot this is gardening blog not philosophy blog!

Here is the biggest shrub i have in my garden,Changeable Rose, Chinese Rose, Confederate Rose, Cotton Rose, Botanical Name : Hibiscus mutabilis. The flower open pure white and change color over a three-day period until they are deep pink and then as they die assume a dark "blue-pink" hue. It is presently 10-12 ft, full of buds. I planted it 2 years back. They have a fast growth rate.

It starts with small bud and takes a little long time to open up!

Getting a hint of pink color from the heat of the sun.

Heated up, the flower turns to a pink color by evening.

It gets darker by the time it says good night.

Like flowers, the leaves are big too nearly 5-7",the only sad part is that this beautiful flower blooms for a day only.

For the first time I started Portulaca in my garden from seeds, Earlier i tried by cuttings once, though cuttings were successful too but i think its better to start of your own. Its blooming all over i have planted it in two different containers, one actually is old trashed washbasin. ( Sorry no pics of it)

Now I am firm believer that if you ask for something from your heart sooner or later God fulfills your wishes!

Last year I read about Cobrahead online and watched its video on cobrahead.com and wanted to have it right then. I tried to search if its available in India but it wasn't so it just got listed into my wishlist!

But guess what last month in spite of my irregular blogging habit somehow i managed to be at right place at right time. I participated in cobrahead giveaway organized by Carol at May Dreams Garden and it would be sheer luck that guys at Cobrahead decided to give one Cobrahead to everyone who participated! Can you believe this! Well it was hard for me to believe!

I received it on Monday and as soon as I got my parcel, I opened it and couldn't stop myself from trying it right there at my office (LOL)

It is just too good and a must have for every one out there!

It is made of Cardboard and paper mache pulp. This was my first try with paper mache and it turned out to be good.

It needs one more coat of white color, i'll do that tommorrow!

Dear all

Some of my plants at the moment are not in very good condition, its all because they have been neglected yes neglected by me and i feel so bad for doing so. Though they were not totally neglected, i use to water them and thats all i was doing nothing else.

Now i want your help to recover them.

My first question is when to change the soil in the containers ? Is there any specific season i should do it or it can be done all year around?

Next it about bougenvilla, Why my bougenvilla isn't blooming ? It is my first year with it but it didn't bloomed even a single flower and its growth is too slow too.

I've been using some small old, waste containers from my mother's kitchen as my pots. I really like them for annuals.

During my self exile from the blog world. Many things happened at my garden..
Today i am sharing the bad ones. I lost two of my plants.

Azalea

I don't know what happened to this one, first the leaves started browning, i changed the water routine and its positioning .Then after some days when there was no improvement i changed the soil too with better compost etc but nothing could save it.

And this beauty was gone as something fell on it. Construction work is going on at our home and i was away when i came back it was in worst condition beyond any possibility of recovering.

I got fresh cuttings from my office plant and again i am trying to propagate it.

Epipremnum aureum, also known as the Pothos, money plant. I got a small cutting from my neighbours and rooted it in water for some time after the roots were well established it is now shifted to a small pot.

Remember this plant i bought for my office, Well its been doing fine at office and i just got one small cutting from this plant and just propagated it in small container at home.

After a month, the propagating cutting is looking fine with blooms...

I bought this plant casually without knowing much about it, but today I can say that it was definitely a mistake to buy just one plant.

I just fell in love with it once I saw those beautiful buds, and then ....

the flower OMG a real heart- stealer, it is just magnificent.

Lisianthus plants are herbaceous annuals, growing to 15 - 60 cms in height. Lisianthus plants have bluish green, slightly succulent leaves, and large funnel shaped flowers growing on long straight stems. It requires good amount of light. I have placed mine in balcony where it gets 3-4 hours of Sun.

I made these curtain holders as a trial but i think they are nice, just need some final finishing - some buttons or catcher at the ends. I used the Flower loom to make the flowers and chain has been crocheted.

Four o'clock is the usual tea time, but during summers these beautiful flowers makes it more refreshing.

Aren't these lovely ? Commonly known as Four o'clock (Mirabilis i think its the correct name)

These wildflowers are growing in the field next to our home, every year it self sows and a huge amount of plants come out in my area too. I make sure to pull out as many as i can 'cause its kind of invasive, but it is lovely and i keep quiet a few to admire its beauty.

Gompa is a Bhudist Temple.

One such gompa is under construction near by our home, last sunday i visited it here are few pics.The construction work was goingon on exteriors while the painting, hand carving etc were being done inside.

This is the main Idol of Buddha

Adjoining to this main idol were two more idols being constructed, All are handmade using clay and cotton.

The pillars were beautifully painted.

The ceiling too has been painted with beautiful designs.

I am just waiting for its completion, they said it may take around a year or so. The location too is just fantastic its on top of hill with high mountains all around. You can get a good view of the valley from there.

Though it has a good lawn but nothing much was planted, i hope its also in progress i found these two plants and some hibiscus plants planted accross the stairs.

I have always admired Hydrangea, last year i just propogated one cutting and its been doing good, its a small plant and heavy blooms. It gives a feeling of self appraisal when i propagate the plants and they do well :)

Its been long since i was just thinking off adding some zing to my office, it was all very boring, today i bought some plants for my office. Its feeling so nice to have plants around you.

I always wanted to have some nice plants indoor at home too but we do not get much sun in rooms. We have nice sunny office, so my wish of having indoor plants can be fulfilled here :)

Split - Leaf philodendron

We are having some constrution work going on at home so have to shift this to balcony, but i think it didn't liked the new place, all leafs are turning yellow, brown as you can see in the picture. Though i saw new leaf is coming out but the condition of the plant doesn't seem good to me.

This one is another variety of fuchsia, it will be blooming soon too. I am in love with Fuchsia, I saw these flowers on internet last year and just loved it, luckily i got the plant in nursury and its been growing nicely in my pots since last year.

Today there was no electricity in office and our invertor gave backup for only few hours so there was a lot of time to kill. I had my crochet in my bag so i started my mobile cover and its almost finished. i used the pattern from here. Its looking nice

Had first blooms of Gerbera daisies and guess what it is supposed to be the summer time but weather has been strange for the last two days. Its raining and its cold. We have to take out our woolens back to beat the cold. As far as i remember this is the first time in my life that we are wearing woolens in MAY.

I missed April GBBD, but here is what i have blooming right now in my garden !

Amaryllis - beautifuly blooming

Geraniums - Red , Magenta, White , Pink I have planted them all together and they do make a beautiful show every year.

This one is a new addition still in pot, i propageted it myself just got a cutting from my cousin, i love this color.

My Daises - Just love them

Snapdragons - I have no idea from where it came to my garden. Its beautiful will get more of these next year.

Fuchsia - I have three varities of Fuchsia, this one is first to bloom and the plant is almost loaded with beautiful blooms, I like the colorful display.

Chincherinchee - This is second year of Chincherinchee in my garden and they are doing pretty well, nice blooms.

We call it Ramtulsi here - dont know its name . My mother use these flowers for her morning prayers.

Marrigold, I bought a hybrid plant last year and these one are grown from the seed of that plant, they are not exactly the same but they started blooming very soon.

After a loooong span of time i picked up my crochet hook ( as i did my gardening tools) and worked on some things here i am to share my work with u all !! Its really addictive thanks to ravelry and other blogs for lighting up the spark in me.

This one is a bag i made for my mom and she liked it very much ( Though it was just a trial and i kind of don't like the colors much but still its ok, isn't It ?)

What a relief !!!

for last few months i was so worried for my hairs, I was really concerned for my hair fall. I used various shampoos Dove, Sunsilk, All Clear - whatever came with hair fall tag nothing helped me but then my mother bought me "Patanjali - Kesh Kanti Shampoo" and believe me it really worked. Not only my hair fall has decreased to a remarkable amount but also they are in much better condition now with all shine and health. Its really a wonderful product.

Ramdev Baba is really doing a marvellous job, Thanks to him (:-)). I am also using his Aloevera juice and Amla juice and both have become a part of my daily dose.

Hello Friends

I love gardening ever since i remember i think thats what u call born with green thumb. I remember we use to live in small apartment and i used to grow my plants in small tin pots most of them were succulents then. When we shifted to our home i was so exicted that now i can have my own small garden . I planted some roses, daisies, lilies some succulents, gazinia, geranium some strawberries etc.

By the time other things mainly studies took over my passion and eventually my so called garden was almost dead. But after so many years now i am back again to my love my garden my plants. This time all the credit goes to the wonderful people here with their blogs which inspired me to go back pick my tools and start gardening again.
